As a business owner, production costs must be kept down, so it sounds smart to go with whatever company offers the lowest pricing for your custom packaging. Whether it’s an American packaging supplier outsourcing their production overseas, or companies abroad advertising directly to American business owners, it’s possible to encounter unit prices as low as 10-15 cents per box. Great idea, right? Actually, it’s worth being cautious about such offers.
Of course it’s possible to be happy with packaging made outside of the States, but business owners who are more particular may find that the results are a letdown. Not only does having packaging made overseas take significantly longer than American-made boxes, the final results are more likely to have manufacturing flaws or simply be too flimsy for the products placed inside. We’ve also heard personally from multiple business owners who had their custom packaging made in other countries, only to get slammed with unexpectedly high import taxes and other related costs afterward—a trend that has driven them back to American-made packaging. Although the unit prices are higher, American-made packaging tends to offer higher quality and better transparency as to the type of results that can be expected.
